Discover the fascinating history of the Zwaanendael Colony and the Zwaanendael Museum. Founded by the Dutch in 1631, the Zwaanendael Colony was the first European settlement in what is now Delaware, established as a whaling and trading post near present-day Lewes. Though short-lived, the colony marked an important chapter in the region’s early colonial history. The Zwaanendael Museum, built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the settlement, showcases exhibits on Delaware’s maritime, military, and cultural heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into Lewes’ rich past.
If you’re interested in attending, please RSVP by Tuesday, March 3rd to the Village office at 302-703-2568 or info@villagevolunteer.org. Members who need transportation should call to request a ride no later than Wednesday, March 4th.
